RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Red blood cells (RBC) are subject to oxidative stress by reactive oxygen species during refrigerated storage. Near-complete removal of oxygen from red cells during storage should eliminate this contributor to the red cell 'storage lesion'. The in vitro effects of storing red cells under oxygen-depleted conditions for extended periods were investigated, and these were correlated with the observed recoveries after reinfusion. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Units of red cells, obtained after 'soft spin', were placed in a double volume of AS-3 additive solution and subdivided. Oxygen in the test units was depleted by repeated exposure to Ar gas (to O(2) saturation < 4%), and units were stored in anaerobic canisters for up to 15 weeks. Samples were taken weekly to monitor adenosine triphosphate (ATP), 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), cell-free haemoglobin, and vesicle production. In a parallel experiment, six units of red cells was depleted of oxygen in a similar manner, stored for 8, 9 and 10 weeks, and reinfused autologously to determine the 24 h post-transfusion recovery via (51)Cr/(99m)Tc radiolabelling. A similar study was also carried out using EAS61 additive solution, which by itself, had shown the ability to support 9-week storage, comparing biochemical profiles and in vivo recovery after aerobic vs. anaerobic storage. RESULTS: Oxygen-depleted AS-3 units had significantly elevated ATP levels compared to controls. They also had significantly lower cell free haemoglobin and vesicle production when RBCs were stored for more than 9 weeks. An average of over 75% post-transfusion survival was observed after 9 weeks of anaerobic storage with less than 0.43% haemolysis. However, no further extension of storage was achieved with EAS61 additive. CONCLUSION: Anaerobic conditions permit acceptable 9-week storage of RBCs using double-volume AS-3 additive solution. It did not synergize with the alkaline, 9-week additive, EAS61, to further lengthen the acceptable storage time. These studies indicate that anaerobic storage may allow reduction in the effect of the storage lesion, but suggest that other factors contribute to limitations of RBC storage as well.

RESUMO

The convergent validity of select clinical scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist-Youth Self-report was evaluated in a sample of 188 adolescent psychiatric inpatients. Clinical scales of the MMPI (Scales 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 0) and of the Youth Self-report subscales of Somatic Complaints, Depressed, Aggressive, Delinquent, Thought Disorder, and Unpopular were selected for comparison based on their conceptual similarity. The extent to which scores for self-reported behavior on the Youth Self-report converged with scores on related clinical scales of the MMPI was evaluated by correlations and multiple regression. Concurrent validity for most comparisons between similar scales of the two measures was indicated and support the validity of the Youth Self-report as a self-report measure with an heterogeneous clinical sample of adolescents. The results establish a clear link between self-reported behaviors on the Youth Self-report and scores obtained on the select MMPI clinical scales which would conceptually be associated with those behaviors.

RESUMO

Fourteen months after a hurricane, young children who had experienced the storm showed significantly higher anxiety and withdrawal and more behavior problems than did children who had not. Behavioral problems decreased steadily over the six months following the storm. Mothers' distress in the hurricane's aftermath was associated with the longevity of their children's emotional and behavioral difficulties.

RESUMO

The present study examined the relationship between children's coping styles (Spirito, Stark, & Williams, 1988) and self-reported levels of depressive symptoms (Kovacs, 1983) following a major stressor. 257 third- to fifth-grade children consented to participate in the study, 5 months following a hurricane. The number of coping strategies employed was positively related to depression scores, whereas coping efficacy was negatively related to depression scores. Social withdrawal, self-blaming, and emotional regulation were associated with more severe depressive symptoms. Lower levels of symptomatology were found among children who sought social support and engaged in cognitive restructuring. The overall symptom level in the sample did not exceed that of normative samples. Results are discussed in terms of competing theories of childhood depression.

RESUMO

This study provides normative data on 270 child and adolescent psychiatric inpatients using the Bender Recall technique as a measure of short-term visual memory. In addition, the authors present normative data on another immediate recall technique using the Coding section of the WISC-R. These findings are examined in light of age differences and IQ scores. Detailed instructions for administering the Coding Recall technique are presented.
